7 Last Sayings of Christ Mini Sermon

Luke 23:46  (HCSB) 46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” Saying this, He breathed His last.

From the depths of his pain and agony, Jesus cried out with a loud voice to the Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.  After saying this, Jesus finally died after hours of torture.

Jesus is on the cross already at this point.  He has already been crucified.  He has already been tortured and whipped, with a cord that had bits of glass and nails and bones imbedded in it, that tore Jesus’ flesh open.  He has paid the penalty for our sins.  Two thieves are hanging next to Jesus, and one mocks Him.  The other is remorseful, and asks Jesus to remember him when he came into his kingdom. Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”  You might trust in Jesus just before you die; but that is like trusting that you will be close enough to a rock to save yourself as you approach the edge of Niagara Falls! After all this, there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. The veil of the temple was torn in two.

                                     Then he breathed his last

Jesus did not faint; he did not become unconscious only to be revived later—he breathed his last. Jesus died as a human being—voluntarily, sacrificially, in the place of sinners. And since Jesus paid the penalty for your sins and mine, if you surrender your life to Him, you can be forgiven, and you can receive the gift of eternal life.
